Today, came home from a long day of work to discover 16 feet of our fence laying in the driveway. It had been blown over due to the high winds we are having this week.
I can't say that I was completely surprised. We knew that part of the fence had problems. In fact, we had been calling fence companies this past week to get estimates to fix it. The support post had cracked due to high winds and it was only a matter of time before it came down. Unfortunately, it happened before we got it fixed. And even worse, it happened when I was home alone. At first I thought I could take care of it myself. I thought I would just drag it whole into the backyard. Yeah, I quickly discovered that 16 feet of fence is damn heavy! So I called the husband and told him to come home immediately. But then I saw my powertools and an idea hit me. Oh how those powertools inspire me! I whipped out the circular saw and got to hacking the 16 feet into more manageable 3 feet sections.
Of course, life can never be too easy. My powertools are cordless. Which I love.....and hate. You see, even though I have two batteries that fit the powertools, they were both out of power. So I had to throw one battery on the charger while I used the other for hacking. The battery I was using would only last for 2-3 cuts, then I had to swap that battery to the charger and use the one on the charger for another 2-3 cuts before it was drained. Then swap again. It got the job done, but was annoying. So, note to self, charge the batteries after use. Don't just leave them sitting next to the charger! So I hacked up the fence and dragged it into our backyard. I called my husband and let him know that he lucked out by marrying such an ingenious man and didn't need to come home after all (it is his rock climbing night). We can now get into our driveway and thus the garage to park the cars. But now we have to pay to have the fence repaired. Actually, I think we are just going to pay to have the fence replaced. It was the homebuilder "special" which came with the house when we built it and those aren't very good to begin with. We stained it twice over the years which helped it last longer than many of our neighbors, but it is time to go. This time we need metal posts that aren't spaced so far apart. It's money we weren't planning on spending, but I guess we have to do it. Just one of those joys of home ownership.
