If you are experienced sewer or crafter then you are probably familiar with the rotary cutter and it's mate the cutting mat.  But for anyone just starting down the crafting road to bliss, this is something you definitely need in your crafting area.

rottary_cutterThe rotary cutter makes cutting straight lines fast and easy.  You lay down your fabric, put your ruler where you want to cut, and then roll the rotary cutter.  Viola, a perfectly straight cut in seconds flat.  A major improvement over having to mark the fabric where you wanted to cut, then using scissors to meticulously cut down your marks.  For $10-15 this little item is a must have in your crafting room.cutting_mat

And the companion to your rotary cutter is the self healing cutting mat.  Using your rotary cutter on the table top would leave cuts, gouges, and slashes - ruining the surface in no time.  The cutting map is there to protect.  Plus, it has a great grid pattern in inches so it can be used for quick measurements.  They call the mats "self-healing" because they do not show the cut marks after you run the rotary blade over them.  I've found they last about a year before the number of cuts is just too much and they start to degrade.  They come in different sizes so it can fit whatever table space you have.  They are a little more expensive - $30-50.  Of course, many of the crafting stores send out coupons for 40% off on a regular basis.
