I was shopping in Crate and Barrel one day when I stumbled across a beautiful quilt. I loved it instantly. Unfortunately, it cost more than I wanted to spend. Then it came to me.......I could make it!
I had just begun sewing at this point. I had made a few pillow cases and a shower curtain. All the projects had turned out good so I was feeling confident. So confident, that I decided to tackle a quilt from scratch. Now I had no experience quilting, so I was flying blind. I came up with the method on my own. I know there are much better ways out there, but I did not know about them then.
The quilt I saw in Crate and Barrel was striped. The stripes were made up of different pieces of fabric. Every other stripe was brown. The brown stripe was actually two shades of brown (one light, one dark) repeating themselves. The stripes between these were made up of different colored solid and print fabrics - orange green, and blue. That was my basic design pattern.
The quilt in the store was made of rich, beautiful silks Since this was my first stab at a quilt, I decided to buy cheap cotton/polyester fabric. If I liked the result I could always but more expensive fabric to give it another go.
So here is a pic of the finished blanket.
I am really happy with it. I think it turned out great for my first time. This is the blanket I use around the house in winter. It is great for covering yourself on the couch or while reading. I did make a second one with more impressive fabrics. I loved the way it turned out. The fabrics made a big difference. I gave that one to my mother. Next time I visit I'll take a pic and add it. When I gave it to her I got the biggest compliment/ego boost because no one believed that I had made it. For me the best compliment you can give a DIY person is to assume that they bought it at a store.
