Yesterday I surfing the web when I stumbled across a how-to on binding books on the Cut Out & Keep blog. I decided to give it a go!
The instructions were very simple to follow and the process was a breeze. The hardest part was making sure the thread was tight and the signatures were not flopping around. For the cover, I used a quilting-on-paper technique from Denyse Shmidt's book that I had used earlier to make the Dis-cards. The cover turned out nice except for one problem. I applied some fabric glue to the edges so it would not fray, and the glue discolored the fabric. I didn't care too much since this was just a test run.
I'm very happy with the results. I was able to create my notebook in about an hour - including time to create the cover and bind the book. I learned a few things in the process.
- Test fabric glue on a swatch before applying to your finished product. The bottle even says this! But did I follow directions? Of course not. Now I've learned my lesson.
- I need to make the cover out of heavier card stock. I used 65 lb. card stock and it is too light for the job. I can see the cover tearing over time with repeated use.
- Lay your signatures inside your cover before you start binding to ensure they are the correct width and height. Again, I should have known this but I was in such a rush. I was just too excited to be careful.
So here are a few pics of the finished product. When I create some more notebooks, I'll post an update.
